2 Player Checkers — Play a Friend on One Device

The board above is ready for two players. This is local "pass-and-play" checkers: you and a friend share a single phone, tablet, or computer and take turns. One of you plays Red, the other plays Black — no sign-up, no download, completely free. It is the quickest way to settle who is really better at checkers.

How 2-Player Mode Works

  1. Red moves first. The player on Red taps one of their pieces, then taps a highlighted square to move.
  2. Pass the device. The turn indicator above the board switches to "Black to move" — hand the device to the other player.
  3. Black moves, then pass back. Keep alternating. Captures are mandatory (if you can jump, you must), and reaching the far row crowns a King.
  4. Win by capturing all of your opponent's pieces or leaving them with no legal move.

There is no AI in this mode — every move is made by a human, so the game is exactly as sharp as the two people playing it. New to the game? Skim the rules of checkers or the beginner's guide first so you both play by the same rules.

Why Play Two-Player Checkers?

Playing a friend is a different experience from playing the computer. A human opponent is unpredictable, bluffs, makes bold sacrifices, and learns your habits over a session — the social back-and-forth is the whole point. Pass-and-play also needs nothing but this one page: no second account, no friend code, no waiting for a match. Sit across from someone, share the screen, and play.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play 2 player checkers on one device?

The game on this page starts in two-player mode automatically. Red moves first, then you pass the device to the other player for Black's turn. The indicator above the board always shows whose move it is.

Is 2 player checkers free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, download, or in-app purchases.

Who goes first?

Red moves first. The first-move advantage is small, so many players alternate who takes Red each game.
